Image of You lead us to believe you’re using the Reddit algorithm, but you’re not. What gives?

If we have led you astray, we apologize and we’ll come clean.

Yes, the front page algorithm that is labeled reddit is a slight modification of the algorithm we understand reddit uses. The algorithm that we offer you takes into account what we believe is a (potentially inconsequential) error in reddit’s code, and which is explained well here. We believe that, with the correction, the algorithm now properly reflects the intent: that newer posts have priority over older posts, including posts that are downvoted (which appears to be the focus of the problem). However, we understand that reddit’s front page isn’t impacted by using (theoretically) incorrect code.

If we get enough complaints from mathematicians that reddit’s code properly reflects the intent in all cases, we’ll consider changing it.

About FAQ

gettingstarted/faqc_prompt

We’re not entirely sure it’s appropriate to call this the Frequently Asked Questions area as, candidly, we don’t keep track of how often these questions get asked. Consider this community as a place where we post answers to what we anticipate your questions will be. But, if our crystal ball is malfunctioning, feel free to post your question in /GettingStarted/Help. If we turn your question into an FAQ, we’ll credit you back the karma to post it. It’s the least we can do. We also welcome suggestions at /GettingStarted/SuggestionBox.
